You could try a Cummins Bt4A 4 cylinder.I would say a Bt6A but @ 1000lb. it would break a Z.Cummins Bt4A are found in bread trucks, some construction eqipment, chippers.Search jeep conversions etc. on google.
Bt4a= B series, turbo,4 cyl,Aftercooled.

You have noticed, haven't you, that diesel is presently quite a bit more expensive than gas. . .

That said, it's been done, and it could hardly have been done better. About 20 years ago, some guys put a L28D — the Maximas were available with them one or two years — into a 240Z. And then they ran it on vegetable oil. It was called the Veggie Car and did a big tour to promote veggie diesel. From what I remember, the engine had a turbo on it and the builders claimed it would do 120 mph AND it got 44 mpg or thereabouts. I wound up on eBay in 2004, asking price $20K. I don't know if it sold for that. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to find info on it anymore. The website is long gone and I can't even find a pic. But if you want to go the same route, that's one avenue worth pursuing. Also search archives on this site for more on that car and diesel datsuns in general. Lots of information.

BTW, the L28T is exactly what it sounds like: an L28 that ran on diesel. It is the exact dimensions of a 'gas' L28 and will bolt right in place in your Z. The fuel plumbing will take some fiddling to get right, tho. I gotta think it's a heavier engine than the gas version, which would take away something from the 240s nice handling. But it's hard to argue 'cons' when you're getting 40+ mpg.

You've got a lot more problems than just the fueling.

To put a Maxima diesel in a Z, you also have to either fabricate a rear sump oil pan or source one from Japan.

It is an "L6" series engine, so it will "mostly" drop in otherwise.

The key is to get a Maxima diesel running "parts car" and use that as your source. At least that way, you know you've got all the parts necessary to make it run!

If you're sourcing from Japan and you can find one, I've seen an RD28T installed in a pathfinder. Basically an RB Turbo Diesel from the Factory!

Stay are from RD28s, they are not good engines, people refer to them as having heads made of butter. Its very common to find old RD Skylines and Laurels here in NZ with warped heads.

A friend of mine has an LD28 in an 280ZX, the swap was pretty easy from what I can remember him saying. The alternator is on the other side of the engine bay so you have to redo the wiring for that, and you need to modify the pickup for the oil pan, he just used an original L28 oil pan and extended the pickup. Oh, and the tach won't work.

Check with Rayaap (DMS)

He has posted extensively on the conversion of his 260Z to an LD28.

There are LD28T's available as well.

Keith Bailey's car (photos above) got 40+ mpg driving 80+ mph from North Carolina to NY for the Syracuse Convention, and whipped a$$ on the Auto-X course.

The Veggie car was NOT done 20 years ago. Less than half that.

The LD28 is probably the easiest one to swap into the Z. Performance will be adequate, and mileage slightly better than what you will get from a Petrol Engine optimized for fuel economy.

Frankly, newer turbodiesels with electronic injection are the way to go, but unless you are in Europe and have access to BMW and Mercedes diesels (****, even the 3 Liter direct injected Nissan Turbodiesel or the old 2.7 Liter Turbodiesel from the Navaras....) you aren't looking for anything you will be able to really easily 'tune' for performance like the current generation of Diesels.

BMW M3 with 2.0L Turbodiesel, making over 250HP and 450 ft-lbs of torque with simple chip and boost upgrade. Chip alone put it to 188HP and 325 Ft-Lbs of torque, AND made it get better fuel economy...over 40mpg at 253kph. I know, I was there, I took the picture!!!
